From paper to born-digital: AI makes welding records traceable

When quality documentation must be submitted, or a given weld’s operator, time and parameters must be traced, paper archives often take days to search — and may still turn up nothing, while being hard to protect against tampering. Yet the deeper problem with paper is not the labor: it is that paper captures the result, not the process. What gets recorded is a conclusion such as “pass / rework,” while the actual current, voltage, gas flow and whether the process was correct at the moment of welding are never preserved.

The key to changing this is making records born-digital — the process data is captured and logged in structured form at the very moment welding happens, rather than reconstructed afterward. After-the-fact entry is both labor-intensive and hard to keep truthful.

A workable path is to replace pen and paper with end-to-end digitalization: software schedules production, operators badge in to claim tasks, select the job and report completion; the current, voltage and gas flow during welding are captured in real time by sensing and attached to every weld, forming complete process data.

But process data alone is not enough. To turn the process into usable traceability and compliance, AI must handle process recognition, process matching and compliance judgment automatically; otherwise every record still has to be selected and interpreted by hand — and this is exactly why “networked fleet control / digital traceability” has been so hard to truly deploy for years: it relies too heavily on the diligence, quality and professionalism of individual staff, and rarely takes hold. AI lets process matching and compliance analysis happen automatically in the background, and only then does traceability become deployable at scale.

As a result, documentation cost falls by about 90%, weld traceability improves markedly, and the records can meet the requirements of WPS/PQR and ISO 3834 (for the compliance perspective, see Meeting ISO 3834 / EN 1090). For pressure-vessel, rail-transit and structural fabrication that must pass audits, this data foundation often matters even more than the cost savings.
